Ocean Accounting
We know that single headline indicators do a poor job of distilling the multidimensional data contained in national accounts. Digital data dashboards can take large and complex datasets and present them to users in bespoke ways. The data can be readily disaggregated and viewed from a variety of perspectives. Fenichel et al. (2020) addresses the crucial role national accounting plays in realizing a sustainable ocean economy. We highlight that dashboards can help national accounts fulfill this role in an effective manner.
Since talk is cheap, we felt it was not enough to simply describe what could be done with dashboards—so we built one over the course of six weeks using off-the-shelf software and publicly available data from Statistics Norway.
